It's great to see people on the way up like Kelvin. You can feel good about yourself believing you had a hand in their success. You can nod at the radio or point to the TV screen with some sort of self-satisfied acknowledgement. I knew that guy. Yep - taught him everything he knows.
C'mon get real. Voice actors like Kelvin Barnes are good and get better because they work hard, listen intently and take advice from a small round-table counsel of professionals. Kelvin is grateful for the work but hungry for it too.
The footholds don't come easy when you're climbing a big mountain like "the voice over industry".
Kelvin's voice is as crispy as a chip. There's an outer layer. Dried, hard, sunburnt. The soft centre is worth waiting for. And that's what makes his delivery appealing. You think you're hearing a bloke who puts everything and everyone at shovel length distance. But his younger years can mean the edges of the message come with a cheeky smile and a reassuring nudge of friendship.
Kelvin is the guy who tells other guys what their girlfriend wanted to say, but couldn't.
They've sent Kelvin out beyond the clothes line, beer in hand to break the bad news, or to make things clearer when tears are all they see. His advice could easily start with the phrase........"she wanted me to say this..." or "it's like this mate........"
Care to hold the ladder ? Kelvin is on the way up.
